Gloeocapsa magma is from the genus cyanobacteri, a photosynthesizing bacteria, also commonly called “blue-green algae”. The bacteria is transmitted through the air or via animals, and spreads quickly. Once the spore lands on the north side of the roof, where the sun is less harsh and moisture tends to stay longer, the bacteria begins feeding on the limestone filler placed in shingles in the 1990’s. Black stains begin to appear as the bacteria develop their dark colored and hardened UV-protective outer coating. As weeks pass, the stains become larger and darker, often making long streaking stains.
